Intermodal transportation is a logistics system in which maritime transportation and other transportation systems, which are mostly preferred in international trade, are combined and transportation is carried out from one point with more than one transportation model. Intermodal transportation is an important component of global logistics. The intermodal transportation process is considered a sustainable transportation method that provides a revolutionary development in global cargo movement through the combination of railways, containers, ships and other transportation vehicles.
Intermodal type operations start with road transportation. Product shipment starts by road and continues in this way for a certain period of time, and then when suitable conditions are provided, transportation continues in the form of railway transportation. If railway transportation is not possible, the cargo is transported by sea or air vehicles. One of the methods of intermodal transportation is to bring products to ports by road shipment and load them onto ships there.
